ABSTRACT
This thesis is concerned with a comparative study on the science of Tajweed - viz. correct articulation in Qur'anic Arabic recitation - from its traditional and modern phonetic perspectives.
Clearly, these two fields enjoy different scopes.Tajweed per se is exclusively concerned with correct articulation , hence the pronu-\par nciation, of Qur'anic recitations, whereas phonetics, and here that of the Arabic language, is concerned with a general study of Arabic speech sounds.
Hence, with respect to the differences between the two branches of knowledge, both historically and practically, and also with a view to their common denominators, conducting a comparative piece of research is in order .
Ch. 1 is devoted to a statement of the subject, and its significance; Ch. 2 deals with the nature of human vocal sounds and his vocal apparatus . Ch. 3 presents a classification of Arabic sounds in two categories of vowels and consonants. In Ch. 4, the basics of Tajweed, with respect to Arabic sounds, are provided. Ch. 5 provides a phonetic ground for the description of Arabic sounds.
Finally, in Ch. 6, the main part of the thesis, a comparative study of Arabic sounds is presented from two perspectives: Tajweed and phonetics.
In light of the research conducted, certain terms are suggested, together with a discussion of the few apparently-contradicting issues in the field. In the end, some issues ane subjects are signlled out for further research.
